There are threads mentioning TOR, but The Onion Router is not secure to use for any personal online banking or online bill pay.
The same with a Proxy.
First, TOR uses many personal computers and servers owned by private individuals. Some are not hackers, others are. They can see what goes through their connections if they wanted to. Some monitor for goodies, others don't.
All a hacker needs to do is sniff those end computers and if the hacker created a spyder/bot to look for certain things such as keyword "bank" and you are logging into USBank to look at your account, its going to be picked up.
Next, hackers create their own proxy to drag in the gullible saying its secure, you won't be tracked online, yadda yadda. A person uses that proxy to do online bill pay. Game over.
Next, you have hackers that sniff that banks online connection. Meaning any information going in and out of that bank online, then its being recorded to go through later. They sort through the accounts, log anything with nice chunks of money and sell that info. Some don't, they just keep terabytes of banking data on hand as a trophy.
Online applications, online banking, online bill pay, online purchases made through ebay or other large merchants, online loans, or anything that asks for account info or social security numbers is more than likely a target.
Stock brokers, lenders, or any place large amounts of money is moved around is going to be a target. More than likely sniffed for any large accounts with all the account information. Not to mention the less fortunate like brokers who know nothing about security probably have a very uncommon trojan sending everything back to a hacker somewhere.
Viruses can only be picked by anti-virus software if the virus code is known. Otherwise it will sit working for years until the drive is formatted and a new copy of windows is installed.
That's just pointing out the known, but there are savy hackers who use other methods to get the same results. The hackers get the information they want.
The internet was not designed for purchasing products or to do online banking. It was for communication only and everything online is one big public domain library. However, its job security for IT and other security companies, including anti-virus companies. Its gone too far forward to start over now. So it is "use at your own risk".
Whether we like it or not its not going to change any time soon.
